{April 3, 2008}   My experiance in blogging;)

hi-hello-01.gif

You are now in the sixth and the last posting in my blog for SKBP clas with dearest Datin Norizan and Pn. Zaini. There are many issue that I have discuss in my blog like the used of concordance, CALL, computer assisted writing and many more. So for my final posting I will share with all of you out there about my experiance. At the first time when we were told that we have to create our own blog by Datin,  was very excited but yet a liitle bit worried because I never have a blog before and I dont even know how to create a blog. I thought that Iwas the only one who does not know how to create a blog, but much of my classmate also dont know how to create a blog. So, this is really a new experiance to all of us. After knowing that, I have get more excited and thrill to get my own blog and create it in my own style.

However, the blog activity is not only for fun, but it also have improve my writting skill. When we just start blogging most of our posting was just copy and paste work. But it doest not mean that we are taking the easy way to complete our posting. But that was the first time we have to write our post so we dont really know what is the best way to write a post than just copy and paste. However, after Datin give her commen for my first posting I have got the clue and more understand the posting is not all about copy and paste but I also can use my own words and give my own oppinion to create a better result for my posting. I have found that my writting skill have been improve from time to time.

Blogging is also a very usefull learning experiance for me. It’s not only improve my writting skill but also my creative thinking. I was a very enjoyable activity and I will get very excited every time we get a new posting to do. It is also very effective because there is also many things that I can do in this blogging activitythan just writting a post. I’m also have learn on how to insert picture and sound into my blog. I have manage to explore it just by myself  and was very happy when I see the slide show that I have made by using my own effort. That is one of the thing that I need to know before I can complete the blohhing activity successfully. After I have master all the technic , blogging now is more and more exciting. I really think that I just can’t stop blogging now.

There are not many problem that I facing during using the blog. The problem is only at the first time we do the blogging activity. Maybe that is because I have not really use to it. But after I explore more about the blog and use it often I have manage to sattle the problem. I think it is actually easy and fun to have and create our own blog if you have will to do it.

After this I will definately tell my friends and recommend to other about blogging. In fact there is also some of my friends are now interested in blogging after they see my blog and hear about my experiance in blogging. They was already ask for my help to guide them to create their own blog. I think I still will continue blogging even after the SKBP is over. If I have time after this I will write more in my blog and maybe create a new blog.

Last but not least I would like to thank Datin Norizan and Puan Zaini for their guide during this course. To Datin thank you very much for your comments. I have improve more in blogging with your guide. Thanks a lot for introducing me to such a usefull and enjoyable activity like this. To Pn. Zaini I hope you will get well soon.

For today tutorial activity, we had to subscribe and do the UJI ICT test posted in e-warga and complete the online test for ASAS LEVEL. We have to do the test within maximum time 30 mins and submit the answer. This is my first time in taking online test and I find it a little bit difficult. Maybe this is my the first experiance in doing online test so get a little bit nervous because i’m worried that I can’t  complete the the test on the time that have been given. However after a few question I can get used to it and complete the test successfully. However, I find that online test is more flexible compare to manual test. This is because the online test can provide us with the immidiate featback. That means we can get the result immidiately after finish the test. Compare to the manual test more time will be needed to check the paper one by one. The online test not only will save time but also energy as all the work have been done by the computer. And that is the reason why we used computer which is to make our work more easier. That means computer have play their role as a usefull tools for human. Futhurmore, the security features that they have in online test is more powerfull and strong in order to protect all the test data. Moreover the percentage to lost the test paper is lower compare to the manual test as the paper will be submit immidiatly online. From all of this I can say that online test is one of the best way that can be used in school or in university as it will give benefit not only for teacher or lecture but also for student in term of saving time and security. Actually there is pro and contra in using online test, I think there are many improvement that should be included if we want to use online test widely especially on the security aspect. This is because the problem may occur if we have press a wrong button and the question that we have done can be deleted and we have to do it again and it will be waisting time. However the best reason to do the online test is because of the immidiate result that we can get.

{March 29, 2008}   Application of concordance.

Hai…..meet me again in my forth posting:)

It heve been a holiday last week since we dont have clas an tutorial and there is also no posting that we have to do. But for this week we were ask by Pn.Zaini that lecture us in this week class to do more research on the applycation of concordance. Concordance is really a new thing for me  and I dont even know what it is before until datin explain it to all of us in clas. I think it was such a great tool for us to use as a language student. Enought of that, in this forth posting first of all me and my partner will do a summry on the article of “Beyond Concordance Lines: Using Concordance to Investigate Language Development” in the OTL book page.

Beyond Concordance Lines:Using Concordance in Investigate  Language Develpoment.                                                                                                                                                                                        By Arshad Abd. Samad

Language corpus has commonly used as the basic of dictionary and teaching material. The used of it have been enhance by the easy avaibility of concordance software. The concordance were used to discover how words and grammatical construction are used. Concordance have change student thinking about linguistic and have change student thinking about linguistic and have change into an interesting subject. The Emas corpus is one of  the corpus that consist of close to half a million words. This corpus contain written data in the form of three diffrent essay written by about 800 students. In investigating of language development various method can be use. In the Emas corpus a basic assumption have been made that state the development pattern can be implied by comparing the laguage used of the three diffrent age group. The language productivity and the vocabulary used by the student also heve been examined. Language productivity also have been examined by analyzing the sentence that heve been used by the student and the number of words in their essays. In the Emas corpus they also have been analyzing by using specialized software such as RANGE, a vocabulary analysis program which gives an indication of the kind of vocabulary used. The used of concordance clearly have indicate some forms of development in term of language productivity.

########################################################################################################################################################

Application of concordance.

We have have come to think of the computer as the powerfull tool for language learning in its ability to access and deliver multimedia material with the user in the full control.Yet valuable learning oppurtunities remain using technology that predates these multimedia capabilities. Computer performe simple, tedious task that fast and accurately , such as spell cheking a paper, counting words, finding a particular words, the task that tire the human not the computer. One of the tool that can help us in using computer to do such task is cocordance. A concordance’s function is basically to bring together, in other words, to ‘concord’ passages of text which show the use of a word. It’s a type of index arrangement, working in a similar way to the verbal index found at the back of textbooks, in other words, it searches for instances of a word or phrase and comes up with each case of it. Whereas an index in the back of a book will show words in alphabetical order but only refer to them, the concordance will show each instance of each word together in the context from which it came. The term ‘concordance’ is usually applied to literary and linguistic studies, but it is an extremely useful tool which enables students to access a piece of text non-sequentially or to study the ways in which it uses language. Concordances are not only used for literary purposes, but also as cross-reference systems for computer programmers, which enable teams of programmers working together to keep track of all references to, for example, a variable name, across all the files which make up a project.  A concordance is particularly useful for studying a piece of literature when thinking in terms of a particular word, phrase or theme. It will show exactly how often a word occurs, or even if it does not occur and so can be extremely helpful in building up some idea of how different themes recur within a poem and how they relate to the rest of the poem. So if a question is asked about a certain theme or the use of certain words in a poem and what their place is within the poem, it is easy to see how often they come up by looking at the concordance. This is particularly easy when it comes to computer concordances, all you have to do is click on the relevant letter of the alphabet, a list of words will come up and it is easy to scroll down until you find the right one. From there, you can find out all occurrences of that word in the poem in question.  So a concordance is a bit like a computer; it will find things for you, but it will not do the thinking, you have to do that. What it will do is to get you on the right track when, in this case, it comes to deeper analysis of a piece of text. Most useful are interactive concordances, such as the one here in English. An interactive concordance will also find answers to specific queries and produce lists of all instances of words or phrases, but the advantage is the speed and the fact the concordance will find all words, not necessarily possible in textual concordancing. A concordance application can performed many other function such as using elaborate search criteria, sorting result, varying the leght of the context shown with the search term, making words frequantly list, comparing text and saving list. While concordance is widely used in liguistic study and the study of usage for reference, few laguage teacher have student use it in their classroom. The abscurity of this tool is no measure of it usefulness. Some activities that are as simple as werb search can provide examples of  usage for vocabulary, grammar and even punctuation.

Online Concordance or Concordance in Your Computer?

The advantages of using an online concordances are that you can do this online without installing a concordance program on your computer, and that you can search in much larger corpora (the COBUILD corpus contains 56 million words!), so you will find many more examples of what you are looking for (although these demo programs may limit the number of examples that will be returned — 40 for COBUILD, for example.)

The advantage of using a concordance program on your computer like Conc to search within texts you choose is that you can choose texts you are already familiar with, so the context is clearer. With the online concordances, of course, you can only search the texts they have included in their corpora which will probably be unfamiliar (and possibly unknown) to you.

#############################################################################################################################################################

Concordance Terms.

Corpus:

A collection of text, sometimes from a specific source field in the form of a single computer, readable file or database.

Corpora:

Plural of corpus or generally denoting many texts from a variety of source.

Concatenate:

Link together into a chain, as individual text file are concatenated to form a corpus.

Collocate:

Place side-by-side; a collocation of words shows word appearing frequently near it.

KWIC:

(Key word in context)

A common option for displaying search result for text databased. For a concordance, the searh term appear in the centere of each line in colored or bold text, with the surrounding sentence context to the right and the left. The list can also be sorted by words to the right or the left of the search term.

ASCII:

(American Standard Code For Information Interchange)

A common character set supported by all computers, representing 128 English letters, numbers and symbols. Any text editor can open an ASCII text file, and most can save in this format (also called “text only”), but its usually not their default  format. Corpora concatenate texts in ASCII format only.

Wild card:

A character in a search, often a questiom mark or arterisk that present an unknown character.

###############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################

Aplication of concordance in literary work and linguistic.

From there, you can find out all occurrences of that word in the poem in question.

Concordances are frequently used as a tool in linguistics that can be used for the study of a text, such as:

  • creating indexes and word lists (also useful for publishing)

Hai….met me again in my third posting…
For this week we were ask by dearest Datin to go to PTSL and get some information from online databased hosted at the Tun Sri Lanang Library. We were given five topic but we will only choose one topic to search the information and write about our finding. The topic that I’m going to focus in my third posting is about the impact of using ICT in society. ICT have bring a big impact to our daily life now, we can’t denied that much of our work now are fully depend on the using of ICT. We can used it in many ways, it is very useful to finding out information, comunicate from all people in any part of the world and many other things. The used of ict have bring big impact to society  and change us to be alert with the rapid development of ICT.
The ICT have bring good anmd bad impact to the society. However I will be more focus on the good impact of using ICT.First of all we going to take a look at the online services and employment. The introduction of online services has two effect on employment. Some worker have lost their job because the used of ICT have replacew the need of same types of worker, for example shop assistant and bank cleark. However, the other impact has been an increase the need for workers in more technical aspect of work. By the existance of ICT there are certain job that will be very dangerous for human to do have been replace by using robots. Robot are used because certain task must be performed in the way and with the same degree of acurancy everytime. Moreover, robot can also be used in situation that are unpleasent or dengerous for human to work in such as bomb disposal, working in space, underwater, in mines and working with toxic waste. By using ICT it also help our society to save their time. Before this we have to que to pay our bills and that will take a lot of our time. But by the using of ICT, there is a services like online banking, online transaction and online shopping all the thing can be done in just a second. The used of ICT clearly have provided more leisure time for us. This is because there are sos many activities such as shooping, banking and paying bills can be performed onlinew, most people now have more leisure time as they dont have to spend so much time going to shop or banks. ICT also give impact to our society in economical aspect. With the existance of ICT now our society can just working from their home. This can be call as teleworking, which employees can spending all or some of their time working at home by using their home as an office. One of the benefit of teleworking is that less money has to spend on renting or buying offices. This is because there are some workers have commitments which make it difficult for them to leave theirt home, for example having young families, looking other elderly relatives or having disabilities. With teleworking a housewife now can have their own business that can help them to support their family.
From all of these we can clearly see that ICT have bring big impact to society in many ways. With the used of ICT our live now have been changing. Our life have be more easier and there are so many thing that can be done just with one click. So, it’s all depennd on us on how we going to used it.

{March 4, 2008}   Computer asisted writing

Hello people….meet again in the second post wich is about computer assisted writing. This week we were ask to search for activities that can be use to explain more about computer asisted writing. Here I also will provide the example of software that can be use and some example of URL that host computerized reading activity and discuss how to improve writing skill using computer. I’m also will share more information about this computer assisted writing especially on the benefit and it’s instruction.

Computer-Assisted Writing Instruction

Computer programs for writing help students to developing ideas, organizing, outlining, and brainstorming their. Templates provide a framework and reduce the physical effort spent on writing so that students can pay attention to organization and content.
The example demonstrates how a student has organized her writing. Her topic is the Pangkor Island. She thinks about three main ideas for her topic: food, fun, and jobs. Next, she adds supporting details for each of her three main ideas. Now she can compose her paragraph. Programs like Inspiration or Kidspiration are fun because students can use pictures, change the shape .
Pangkor Island
Food
  • fish
  • crab
Fun
  • Swimming
  • boating
Jobs
  • waterman
  • rescue

Computer Programs for Writing

Word prediction
  • Student-specific programs that identify words that student uses repeatedly; when the student types the first few letters, the program lists frequently used words that start with those letters
  • speeds up the typing process

Speech-to-text

  • student speaks into a microphone and the program types the words
  • program must be “trained” to the student’s word pronunciation and speech style
  • student must be taught how to use the program
  • increased speed from thought to text

Text-to-speech

  • student can hear what she has typed to check if it says what she wants it to say
  • good for editing

Spell-checker

  • helps student identify misspelled words
  • automatically corrects words if the teacher set the program that way

Thesaurus

  • offers student other words that mean the same as the word he or she is using
  • adds variety to student’s writing and increases student vocabulary

Word processors are excellent tools for students who find handwriting tedious. Often, students with disabilities have difficulty with all the requirements for the writing process. They have trouble organizing their thoughts and then retaining those thoughts long enough to put them on paper. Their handwriting must be neat enough and their spelling and grammar correct enough to convey their message, tasks that they may find difficult. But before word-processing can save time during the actual writing process, students must know how to type and how to use the computer. Typing speeds may be slower without proper instruction in typing; slower typing may lead to less quality and shorter length in writing assignment. If students cannot type fluently or must search for letters and numbers, the process may be slower than handwriting.

Here are some related website on computerized writing activities and some of the website also will show you about the software that related to computerized writing and reading.

http://www.ccsf.edu/Departments/English/cyberia/guide/

Summary

Computer has play an important role in our daily life now. The role that computer can play in facilitating the process of revision has been the impetus for the growing interest in the used of the word processor in the teaching of writing. There are many benefit that students will get by using word processor in their writing process. By using the word processor it will provide student with tools to facilitate the mechanical in the process of text composition. With the software that have been provide in the wordprocessor like spelling cheker also can help student to improve their langguage. Beside, bu using word processor as aids to composition they also can do revision while generating and organizing activities that done off-computer. This clearly shows that computerized writing is a very effective way for student to work with their writing activities because it will provide many benefit to the student.

{March 2, 2008}   ROCK YOUR WORLD

My picture:

[rockyou id=104493084&w=426&h=320]

This first posting we were asked to write about writing comprehension. There are three things that that we have to find and do research on it. The three main things that we have to find are restructuring of text, maching and jigsaw reading and problem solving. Then we also have to find some example of text online to explain the list of type of the reading that have been given. My focus on this post is about jigsaw reading and reading for information. Here are some information on jigsaw reading and reading for information:

                            What is jigsaw reading?

Doing jigsaw reading is like playing with jigsaw puzzle. Each person in a group is given part of one story to read. The person has to read and comprehand it all by herself in order to report to other members of the group. After each members has reported the diffrents parts of the story, the group work together rearranging the parts to recover the original story.

Steps of  jigsaw reading.

1) Each group should select one person to be the leader.

2) Divide the articles between the groups and assign each group member one segment to read.

3) Distribute recording sheets to group members so they can take notes.

4) Give the group members time to read their segments.

5) Form “expert groups” and have the “expert groups” discuss the main points of their segment.

6) Have participants move back into their jigsaw groups and present his or her segment.

7) Other group members should ask clarifying questions.

8)  Reconvene as a whole group to discuss findings and clarify any questions.

How to work with jigsaw reading text

We can use any coherent passage to create a jigsaw reading text. But it is more interesting if we use short storiescan. We can divide the story up in between episodes. For example, having divided the story into 4 parts, we make copies so that each student is only allowed to read 1/4 of the story. To make the activity more exciting, we can turn it into a competition: Ask group members to form groups of four. Give each group Part 1 to Part 4 of the story. Tell them to read, to take notes it necessary, and to report orally to the group after reading. The group that can reconstruct the story back to its original is the winner.

What can we achive by doing jigsaw reading.

We can give students a feeling of satisfaction — the satisfaction gained at the completion of a task. In the above examples, students read with a purpose : to transfer information to their friends to reconstruct the story. We can also check comprehension by asking a group to re-tell the story to the class. We can then briefly analyse the text, e.g. quote connectives, cohesion markers, or flow of ideas to illustrate why Part II should follow Part I. We can throw in a bit of story grammar : the setting, the theme, the plot, characters, resolution, etc. By familiarizing students with story grammar, we can help them read more effectively as they have a better schema to rely on. Lets try this simple activity on jigsaw reading. Find two or three newspaper articles on serious issues—for instance, an article about the marked preference in some developed countries,Caesarian births, another arguing for capital punishment, a third about how most young people—if given a choice—opt for exceedingly unnourishing food. Ideally, each article should be somewhat longer than you ordinarily ask your students to read in class. Then follow the following steps that have been given on steps of jigsaw reading……Good Luck 🙂

Reading for information.

What is reading for information.

Reading for information is the technic of note taking.Thats mean that we only take note of what the things that we want to know rather than copy of the whole encyclopedia for example. This will help us to save time and focus to the subject that we want.

  Note-taking consists of three steps:

 1) Identification of keyword and related words in the researchable questions.

 2) Skimming and scanning and extracting needed information. constructed researchable questions.

3) Extracting needed information.

Dentification of Keyword and Related Words in the Researchable Questions

Once students have constructed researchable questions based on the information needed to complete the task or solve the information problem, they can transfer the questions to a data chart (McKenzie, 1979), other graphic organizer, or note cards. The students should then underline the keywords and generate a list of related words. Demonstrate, using the overhead projector, how students will identify keywords and related words. Then allow students to underline keywords and generate a short list of related words for the questions on their data charts as the library media specialist and the content-area teacher monitor.

Skimming and Scanning for Specific Information

Having organized the researchable questions on data charts or other organizer and identifying keywords and related words, students are ready to begin reading for information. This may be the most difficult task a student researcher faces. Teaching students to skim and scan a nonfiction or reference book will facilitate their search. Skimming and scanning “is to utilize text in as pragmatic a way as possible with a minimum of time and effort” (Cheek and Collins, 1985). Skimming requires the reader to read quickly and look for main ideas or supporting details in a paragraph (Phipps, 1983, 4-5). Skimming requires the reader to take in large chunks of text at one time. The reader is concerned with getting an idea of the whole passage. Comprehension does not depend on reading every word. Teach students to read the first and last paragraph of sections for summaries of the content and the first and last sentences of paragraphs to gain an impression of the topic (Cheek and Collins, 1985). Scanning requires the student to “move his or her eyes quickly over a piece of reading material looking for one specific point, the words they are looking for jump off the page at them. It is employed for pinpointing needed facts or ideas from the text or the index. It involves skipping words, but the emphasis is on recognition the reader knows what to look for and rapidly scans until words are found and closer reading can occur (Phipps, 1983. 4-5). Here is where students will look for keywords and related words. Extracting Needed Information
Note-taking consists of four types: citation, summary, paraphrase, and quotation. The citation technique involves exact copying of specific facts (Stripling & Pitts, 1988, 116). Students should learn to take notes by omitting all words or phrases not essential to the meaning. The most important considerations in note-taking are accuracy and honesty. The student must not distort the author”s words or views, and give full credit if copying or quoting the author”s ideas (Irving, 1985.) The trash-n-treasure method supports the citation technique and teaches students how to eliminate unnecessary words and phrases.

Summary

In conclusion we can see that jigsaw reading is a very effective way to encourage student to read. This is because they can do activities in group with their friends where they can share the things that they have done. In this way it also will create team work among them…
